Prayer of Illumination

It is always wonderful to know that someone has you covered, there is something reassuring about it.

In the readings today we hear again God reassuring the Israelites "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name and you are mine". Every now and again we need that reassurance that things are going to work out alright, that whatever we are dealing with is not going to drive us crazy, it is not going to overwhelm us, it is not going to consume us, it is not going to cause us to do something that we will regret later, it is not going to drive us into the wall. Every now and again we need that reassurance that whatever we are dealing with we are not going to come out with the short end of the stick.

People often think that when they become a Christian, they become immune to problems and troubles. Well this Isaiah text highlights that it is not quite so. As Christians, we will face challenges of all kinds but the difference is that we have the benefit of the presence of God to help us to deal with these challenges by remembering the promises of God.

'When' not 'If' you pass through the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you, when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

This should reassure us of two things:

(1) we pass through challenges, you determine whether your challenge is water or fire. if we keep in focus that we are passing through then we know that there is relief ahead.

(2) whether you are going through fire/water - take advantage of God's presence and talk to God about it. You do not have to deal with it all by yourself

And no, you are not bothering God with your problem, no, Jesus does not have better things to do than listen to you gripe/complain. No, you are known by God, by name. Jesus is your Saviour. You are precious is God's sight, you are a vessel of honour, you are loved. Accept God's presence and in those times do not hesitate to talk/to share/ to pray to God.

You may not see a dove-like image, fly down from heaven and rest upon you, which was God's way of confirming to Jesus and the people that Jesus was His Son, the Messiah and that God was with Him. But is you and I can believe our friends and family when they say I am here for you...and they can't do half of the things that God can do, why is so hard to believe God?

Let us accept God's promise of his presence with us and if we accept it, then we will never be alone or afraid.
