This week we continue our journey to learn how to be better stewards of the resources with which God has blessed us by learning to the motivated and joyful givers.

In our scripture this morning (Luke 7:40-47), Jesus is having a meal with Simon the Pharisee when they are interrupted by a sinner woman.  This woman washed Jesus’ feet with her tears, dries them with her hair, and then anoints them with rich perfume.

Jesus explains to Simon why her giving is so special by telling a story about 2 debtors and their love for the man who forgave their debt.

To truly enjoy giving, it needs to come from the heart.  A heart that has experienced the grace and love of god.  A heart that cannot repay God for his blessings but can only pass on that Grace to others.  In life, we all do bad things, some things we get away with scot free, without consequences; some things we suffer the consequences, which do not kill us.  We are here only by the Grace of God.

How many ways have we been blessed?  Now try to repay God for that.  We need to pull from our gratitude, the ability to give with joy.  We need to pay our blessings forward as a sign of our thanks,

Jesus looked at the sinning woman and freed her as she gave him everything she had to give; even though her gifts were considered unacceptable in those times.  Acceptable or not; if the willingness to give is present, the gift becomes acceptable.

It is the thought that counts.  It doesn’t matter if the gift is wrapped or new; only that it is given with thoughtfulness and love.

The key is in counting your blessings and escapes and giving accordingly.
